Richard Maijs
Born in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, the youngest of 7 siblings, with a rich history or gymnastics in his blood.
Started gymnastics at the age of 5 at Genderdal, Eindhoven
At the age of 12 he became part of the Junior National team in The Netherlands, moving to the senior Dutch national team at 16 years old, then competing for PSV. Richard would remain with the Senior National team till age 25, competing for the Dutch National Team at the 1987 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam. Richard has competed at many international individual championships all over Europe and represented The Netherlands at many Team competitions in Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, England, Belgium, and The Netherlands
1989 Graduated College IN HOLLAND with a BA in Physical Education and minors in Tennis, Sports Management and Gymnastics.
1987 Richard visits the USA. He coached at the USGTC summer camp at Cape Cod Massachusetts. In 1987 Richard became great friends with Al Notarnicola and since then have been co-directors of the US Gymnastic Training Centers. Richard has been a director for USGTC in British Colombia, Canada and in Florida, training Elite gymnasts for the summer camp months.
1989 - IMMIGRATED TO THE US. Working for Woodland Gymnastics in Natick,MA.
1995 - ELITE COACH IN TEXAS. He moved to San Antonio, Texas, working for South Texas Gymnastics Academy, being the head girls coach. During his stay at STGA he coached Elite gymnasts, and assisted in the training of Henrietta Onodi, from Hungary for her participation in the 1996 Olympics.
2000 - Richard moves back to Massachusetts. During this time he created State Champions and qualified competitors for the National Championships at level 10.
In June 2000, owner of GTC, Mass, Lynn Mazzaferro, sold the gym to Richard with a parent partnership and moved from the then location in Framingham to Holliston, Massachusetts. GTC kept it’s name and reputation and success, being one of the leading competitive programs in Massachusetts and regional competitions.
2008 - Richard moves to New York to become part of the Gold Medal family. His primary focus will be to build the Centereach gym competitive program and to train and educate all of the Gold Medal staff for Centereach and Rocky Point. Welcome Aboard !
